BTDRE · The Questions

We begin with questions, not answers.

BTDRE is an interdisciplinary project exploring the relationship between self-perception and external expression. Fashion is the medium we are beginning with.

The central question

When people repeatedly choose how to present themselves, what can those choices tell us about how they understand and experience themselves?

What we explore

Seven things we hold in relation to each other.

  1. 01

    Self-perception

How a person understands, describes and experiences themselves — before anything is worn.

  2. 02

    External expression

The visible, repeated choices a person makes about how they appear to others.

  3. 03

    Environment

The rooms, cities, weather, work and relationships those choices have to survive.

  4. 04

    Social perception

How others appear to read the choice — and how the person believes they are being read.

  5. 05

    Behaviour

What the choice permits, restricts or quietly changes about how someone moves through a day.

  6. 06

    Experience

What it actually felt like to be inside the choice, in real conditions.

  7. 07

    Reflection

What becomes visible when someone looks back at the choice with attention.

Open questions

None of these are settled. They are the questions BTDRE is exploring, and they are deliberately written as questions.

  • 01

How does self-perception influence external expression?

  • 02

How does environment influence the way people present themselves?

  • 03

How much of personal style is intentional?

  • 04

How does social feedback affect future expression?

  • 05

What happens when people become more conscious of why they make certain expressive choices?

  • 06

Can changes in external expression correspond with changes in how a person understands themselves?

Beyond alignment

For when nothing feels out of place. These questions are not a sign that something is wrong — confidence and comfort are not suspect. BTDRE does not know the answers.

  • 01

If the way I see myself and the way I express myself already align, what remains to be explored?

  • 02

Is this who I am—or the version of myself I have become very good at being?

  • 03

What parts of myself have I never questioned because they already feel natural?

  • 04

What might become visible if even certainty became something I could examine?

Why begin with fashion?

Clothing is the most repeated decision most people never examine.

Fashion is our first medium, not our definition. We begin here because it is visible, personal, repeated, socially meaningful and highly contextual — an observable starting point for looking at external expression. Other mediums will offer other views of the same questions.

Visible
Unlike most internal experience, a clothing choice can be seen, documented and returned to.
Personal
It is chosen, not assigned. Even a default is a decision someone keeps making.
Repeated
It happens daily, which means patterns emerge over time rather than in a single moment.
Socially meaningful
It is read by other people, whether or not it was intended to communicate anything.
Highly contextual
The same choice behaves differently in a different room, city, season or relationship.

Important

BTDRE does not assume that clothing can reveal, diagnose or determine someone's psychology. We are interested in the relationship between internal self-representation and external expression — and in what people notice when they look at that relationship closely.
